Bosses Give Passes...

...to girls who wear glasses.

I love eye glasses. When I was in 7th grade I bought a pair of fake ones with no prescription and started wearing them to school. My parents promptly became pissed when they realized that their precious daughter was possibly ruining her eyesight by staring through something that was in reality supposed to help eyesight.

What irony.

Anyway, they confiscated the first pair. So I bought another funkier pair. At Contempo Casuals no less. That set was also eventually taken from my clutching hands during a lecture about how I was destroying my eyes and I would soon be blind if I didn't stop.

So I played nice and decided to abandon my idea of looking like Molly Ringwald in the opening scenes of Pretty in Pink. That was, until I started interviewing for jobs in my twenties. And the love of glasses came flooding back.

At some point after graduation, I read somewhere that people who wear glasses are often perceived to be more intelligent, more dependable and in essence, more hirable. So I bought a pair of fake glasses once again. And started wearing them to job interviews. And guess what? I got every job I interviewed wearing them. They say "Guys don't make passes, at girls who wear glasses." But I say "Bosses give passes to those who wear glasses."

The funny thing is the trick worked not only on my future bosses, but on me as well. I can't explain it. I imagine that I feel a lot like Superman did disguised as brainy Clark Kent when I strap those bad boys on my noggin'. But whenever I put on glasses, I actually feel like I become smarter. I say things with more eloquence...I pull intelligent bits of news and factoids out of the ether to share with my interviewee...all in all, I just think. Harder and smarter.

Anyone else a glasses addict?

Can't believe people perceive you as more intelligent with glasses. As your Mom, I know how extremely intelligent you are. Also - wearing fake glasses will make you blind as I told you when you were a child. Mom
