Steve Nygren is an earth father.

“We were living in Atlanta running on the treadmill of life,” says Steve, a restaurateur and founder of The Pleasant Peasant. “On a Sunday afternoon drive in 1994 we discovered a whole area close to Atlanta that was untouched.” He and his wife Marie (daughter of Mary Mac’s owner, Margaret Lupo) sold their house in Ansley Park, resigned from their boards, sold their companies and moved to Palmetto. They soon persuaded other landowners around the area to rezone 40,000 acres to ward off suburban sprawl. And they opened Serenbe, a live/work/play-among-nature community. The homes are all eco-friendly, feature gorgeous architecture and take up only 30% of the property. The rest is cow pastures and preserved forests. Everyone thought Steve was crazy when he decided to break ground on this unique commune, but his success has proven them wrong. He says, “The richness in life is the courage to take the 90 degree turns.”

What do you like about reading skirt!: “I like that you always feature an artist, sometimes someone who’s well-known and sometimes a lesser-known emerging artist. It’s great that you give them that exposure.”
