Maya Padmore | Worldly Woman

Thanks to her parents, Maya’s background is indeed unique. Her mother was born to Eastern European Jews who survived the Holocaust and moved to Israel. Her father is from Liberia, which is a country in Africa formed by freed slaves from the Americas. “I was born in Boston and at 3 years old my parents moved back to Liberia after attending university in the U.S.,” says the 32-year old. At the age of 13, Maya was sent to boarding school in Israel. “While there, a civil war broke out in Liberia and I was told that I couldn’t return home,” she says. “I didn’t know that it would be more than 10 years before I would see Liberia and my father again.” Maya came to Georgia State University after graduating from high school. After getting her degree, she wondered, “Do I live in America? Israel? Africa?” She eventually settled in Atlanta. “My constant struggle has been to miss one place and culture when I was in another.”
