Vibrant people

Wednesday, April, 16, 2008

I know it's cliche, but it's always the people that make the place. Look at these amazing Samburu tribesman. They did a mating ritual dance for all of us Yanks and it was the most beautiful, interesting thing I've seen in a good long while.

The men in this picture can jump at least 3 feet in the air while singing! I can’t even walk up a flight of stairs while talking on my cell. It’s insane. This dance is part of their mating ritual and they do it all to impress the ladies...awwww, courtship is so dead in the States. But the one thing I can’t get on board with is that the Samburu still have a polygamist culture. Oh! and the women build their own cow dung houses. Can you believe that? So, basically if I sign on to be a Samburu man’s 5th wife, I can build my own house out of heffer poop and he can come by when he likes or sleep in one of the other 4 wives houses. Me no likey!

But the Samburus have been doing it like this for thousands of years. Long before Columbus discovered our little neck of the woods. Thank god for women’s lib! Half of me wishes to bring this beautiful lady up to speed and tell her how she should stand up for herself, know her rights and step out on her own...but then I remember that the people make the place and I would hate to change a single thing.
