The Goddess Issue
Imagine powerful, ambrosia-guzzling, infinitely-talented goddesses lying in the sun and discussing the worlds they run. A day at the Parthenon thousands of years ago? Or a Sunday afternoon around an Atlanta pool in 2007 A.D.? Just a merry troupe of idle idols on chaise loungers - CEOs, moms, accountants, moguls, fashionistas - modern day deities; every last one. I decided to try to capture some of their spirit. And while I didn't find them all poolside (some were at the track, others getting their nails done or behind an anchor desk), it was easy to find Georgia goddesses for our pages this month: Laurie is strong like Nike. Selam is Aphrodite-incarnate. Sue is our Goddess of Sensuality and Nicole our Goddess of Youth. Lynne could be no one else but Demeter. And as I observed these skirt-y sirens, I have to admit I began to morph into a Narcissus of sorts and became infatuated with which Goddess I am most like. I finally settled on Calliope, the daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne. As Homer's muse, she was rarely seen without a writing tablet in her hands, which (hey!) sounds a lot like me. That, and she also got to wear a crown. And what Goddess-in-training can resist a crown?
