Lynn and partner Sandee could be direct descendents of Demeter, Greek Goddess of the Harvest. Behind their house, a small crop is growing; watermelons, eggplant, peppers and snap beans abound. "I had a garden in my teens," says Lynn, owner of Sawicki's Meat and Seafood in Decatur. "I remember asking my mom if I could dig up the backyard to plant things." Whether it's harvesting crops or sowing seeds, Lynn and Sandee tend to their land like expectant mothers. Much of their harvest is sold in Sawicki's shop. "When the tomatoes were ripe, we picked about 140 lbs," says Lynn. Her pastry chef made tomato pies with the ones that weren't pretty enough to sell and they stuffed homegrown peppers with fennel sausage. Both delicacies flew off the shelves. "What makes me feel best is that nothing is wasted," says Lynn. The duo uses leftovers for sandwiches and feeds food scraps to the chickens. "At this point we're self-sustaining. We could easily live off the land."
