Voice Over Artist, Alpharetta, GA

My favorite body part: Ooh...perhaps my legs.

I am guilty of: Eating Publix Chocolate Almond Ice Cream after 9 p.m.! Last major purchase: Platinum studs. The world would be a better place, if only: People would use their manners. I still can't get the hang of: Why slow drivers go site seeing in the left lane. And why people put on their hazard lights when it is raining. I wish I'd known: To grab all the opportunities that come your way, as tomorrow is not promised. The most important thing I ever lost: My Valentino jacket. Who loses a jacket once out of Elementary school? Well, I did...I was sick for months. The one item that has changed my life: My passport. The food I could eat every day: Fried sweet plantains. I am most proud of: My sons. Right now I'm reading: The Measure of a Man, by Sidney Poitier. My family: is nicknamed "The Firm" - My mum Esther, Brother J, Sisters Shauntelle and Danielle, and my sons B.J and Mateo. My work: I voice commercials for corporate radio, narrations and on-hold projects. My passion: Fencing and reading. My hometown: London, England. My mother always said: Eat before you go out to eat. Who does that?

Hi Linda, I read the article on you in this month's Essence Magazine (I actually have the magazine), and I am very proud and encouraged by your accomplishments. I also live in Alpharetta, and my dream is to become a background singer. I sing tenor and soprano. I don't know how to go about accomplishing this as I have no connections in the music industry. Can you give me some advise as to how I can become a background singer? Thank you.

Hello Esctt! Thank you for your recent post, I am honored by what you wrote. First of all to be able to sing Tenor and Soprano is a wonderful gift and you have to bring your dreams to reality. Perhaps you should scan the local musicians classified sections and also make contact with the Atlanta Symphonic Orchestra, additionally search some of the better known websites for castings for Background singers in our area and local surroundings. Last but not least do not forget word of mouth! Tell everyone you know of your intentions as they may know someone. All the best!

Hello Linda- I too read your article in Essence and was very inspired by your story, I have been told for most of my life what an amazing/soothing/contagious voice I have, I was recently at the Dr. and he asked me what I did for a living and insisted that at some point in my life I must do "something" with my voice and to let him know when I've found my niche'. Do you have any advice for me, I tried to contact a few local talent agencies, but rec'd no response- I would be interested in any constructive advice you care to offer. Thanks! Hello Rebecca, Thank you for what you said about my Essence article. Like me, you are being complimented over your voice, which I am sure is exciting and strange at the same time, because you have always had the same voice! I think you should take a few voice over lessons (If you have not already done so), which can sometimes be found at various places around, including your local music/instrument stores. Compile a short demo of your voice in various characters and include a few details about yourself (Bio) and re-send it to the agencies again. Also utilise all your opportunities like your Dr. his/her office may require a corporate voicemail. Also have some business card printed. Do not stop knocking on doors! I wish you all the best!

Linda, first off, congratulations on your successes. I was inspired by an article that I read about you in Essence magazine. All my life, friends and strangers have complimented me on the way that my voice sounds. They would constantly suggest that I do some line of work involving my voice. Actually it was a friend of mine who brought the Essence article to my attention. After reading your story, I began to realize that I could do something constructive with my gift. What advice would you give someone like me who's looking to learn more about providing voice services and marketing myself as such?

Thank you so much! Yes, you certainly can do something with your gift...You have too! Aside from your voice and your ability which you have, the rest is in, as you said marketing. So you have to make your voice available in every arena, that you would like it to reach, otherwise who knows you are out there? Make a demo and make it work for you, send it every where can think of, or a slightly easier channel, send it to your local talent agencies. Good luck, if I am doing it, so can you!
